of the difficulties of searching for antiquities is that most of the
people don’t recognise any sort of picture when they see it, so
that if you ask a man if there are any stones with the portraits of
men or animals on them, he replies, “Wallahi ! we do not know
what the picture of a man is like.” And if you show him a bit of a
relief, however good it is he hasn’t the least idea what the
